Building on the UK government-backed joint venture between Hygen and N-Gen – the Bradford hydrogen electrolyser project – Hygen plans to install five hydrogen refuelling stations, 60 mobile hydrogen fuelling units, and 15 hydrogen tube trailers.
Hydrogen infrastructure across Leeds, Bradford and Hull is expected to underpin the deployment of 450 hydrogen-powered assets, including coaches, trucks, mobile generators, construction machinery, materials handling equipment, and light commercial vehicles, to stimulate early mobility demand.
To realise these plans, Hygen is seeking grant funding through the Clean Hydrogen Partnership’s Hydrogen Valleys competition to unlock £250m ($333.5m) in capital investment.
The ‘Lighter than Aire Consortium’ submission, backed by 13 UK firms, sets out the proposed rollout.
“Many companies tell us they need hydrogen to decarbonise, and funding from the Clean Partnership would help us deploy the hydrogen produced at Bradford throughout the region quickly and efficiently,” explained Gareth Mills, Managing Director of N-Gen Energy Solutions.
Hygen also said the Aire-Humber valley hydrogen project will be a “key stepping stone” in Project HySpeed – the 1GW initiative led by JCB’s Jo Bamford.
Hygen and its partner N-Gen recently finalised the Low Carbon Hydrogen Agreement (LCHA) contract for their 35MW electrolyser in Bradford, after it was selected under the first Hydrogen Allocation Round (HAR1) in 2023.
Set to be at the heart of the Aire-Humber valley, the electrolyser is expected to produce up to 12.5 tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen per day from 2027.
