The explosion has reportedly left three workers hospitalised.
The plant employees were taken to the Social Security Institute, and one of them is in serious condition. Two suffered serious burns, while one was injured by a falling roof.
The cause of the explosion is unknown, but one of the plant’s workers, Joaquín García, told local news that surveys are being carried out.
The unnamed complex has been completely shut down with all operations suspended.
According to online reactions, many locals had long expressed concern about the plant operating in a residential area and had contacted authorities seeking a solution.
The explosion in Paraguay is not the first hydrogen-related incident this year.
In October, a fatal blast at SK Energy’s Ulsan refinery in South Korea killed two workers and prompted a sweeping safety overhaul at the company.
The International Association for Hydrogen Safety (HySafe) previously warned that hydrogen will only play a key role in the clean energy transition if “safety leads every step of deployment.”
According to HySafe and other industry safety experts, most hydrogen-related incidents originate during maintenance or commissioning phases.
