H2 View understands, hydrogen refuelling station operator, First Element Fuel will deploy the Class-8 heavy-duty trucks to deliver liquified hydrogen to its refuelling station for the next five years.

The US EPA funding comes from the 2021 Targeted Airshed Grant (TAG), which aims to reduce air pollution in area of the US with the highest levels of ambient ozone and fine particulate matter pollution.

For the TAG programme, Hyundai partnered with the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) and First Element Fuel to develop its application to support the replacement of First Element’s diesel-powered hydrogen transport trucks.

Mark Freymueller, Senior Vice-President and Head of Commercial Vehicle Business Innovation at Hyundai Motor Company, said, “Hyundai is actively engaged in setting up a carbon neutral hydrogen value chain around the world.  We are happy to deploy our XCIENT Fuel Cell trucks in California, especially since this will help local stakeholders to decarbonise the hydrogen supply chain itself by substituting conventional trucks, which have been used to haul hydrogen – to hydrogen trucks.”

Wayne Nastri, Executive Officer of the South Coast AQMD, added, “This is where change starts. Reducing pollution from heavy-duty trucks and construction equipment brings us closer to the cleaner air that our communities deserve. We look forward to seeing this project come to life and deployed in Southern California.”

The plans with the South Coast AQMD and First Element Fuel were first announced in 2021, when Hyundai announced it had teamed up with public and private US partners to operate 30 of its XCIENT Fuel Cell trucks on Californian roads.
