The utility’s HyLine South West study follows two similar assessments for similar pipelines in Wales and aims to strengthen its understanding of the role hydrogen could play in the southwest of England.
Under current plans, WWU foresees the pipeline connecting speculative production hubs in the sea and some of the UK’s government-backed green hydrogen projects in the region, with “high-emission industrial users.”
It will also look at using underground rock caverns for hydrogen storage.
Funded by UK energy regulator Ofgem, the study will deliver technical, environmental, and economic assessments.
WWU Net Zero Project Manager for the South West, James Adam, said the region had “huge potential” to produce clean hydrogen.
“Understanding the infrastructure required to move and store that hydrogen will be a critical milestone,” he said.
