HyCC has selected Kraftanlagen for the basic design and engineering (FEED) of the plant, and has placed an order for the supply of 40MW of alkaline electrolyser equipment from Nel for about €12m.

The 40MW plant in Delfzijl, the Netherlands, is set to produce its first hydrogen in 2026, to support the production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF).

HyCC recently reviewed the environmental permit for H2eron and  is working towards the final investment decision (FID) in 2024, in close alignment with SkyNRG and its partners.

Marcel Galjee, Managing Director of HyCC, said, “Reliable supplies of green hydrogen are key to decarbonise sectors such as the aviation industry.

“We build on decades of experience in large-scale electrolysis and are excited to move to the next phase of the project with these strong partners to lay the foundation for the new hydrogen economy.”

Maarten van Dijk, Chief Development Officer (CDO) of SkyNRG, added, “SAF is a key component in the energy transition and sustainable hydrogen is a cornerstone building block for SAF.

“We need reliable production for our hydrogen demand, and we trust on HyCC to realise this for us.”

The H2eron plant will be operated by HyCC, use Nel’s alkaline electrolysers to produce green hydrogen from renewable power and water, becoming one of the first plants to apply the technology at this scale according to the company.

The hydrogen produced will be used by SkyNRG to produce SAF, made from industrial by-products and residue streams, such as cooking oil.

In its pure form, the use of SAF could result in 85% lower carbon emissions compared to fossil jet fuels, across its lifecycle.

Last year, HyCC launched the project H2era at the Port of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, which is set to gain a 500MW green hydrogen plant to decarbonise mobility and industry.

The project will see the company construct the plant in the Amsterdam port area, which it anticipates could be operational in 2027.

HyCC was launched in 2021 by Nobian and Macquarie’s Green Investment Group (GIG), with the hope to target large industries, such as aviation, steel, chemicals and refineries, with safe, reliable and affordable green hydrogen solutions.

Hans Hide, Nel’s Chief Project Officer, said, “H2eron will have a great positive impact on emission reductions from the aviation sector, and we are proud to be selected as the supplier of our well-proven electrolyser technology to this exciting and important project.”

Earlier this year, Nel announced it was set to supply HH2E with up to 12oMW of electrolyser capacity.

Nel and HH2E signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) for two 60MW electrolyser plants in Germany, which the companies say will be among the ‘largest’ green hydrogen production facilities in Europe.
