The global project developer, financer, builder, owner, and operator of plants producing renewable hydrogen and hydrogen-based e-fuels, Hy2gen now has its first foothold in the German market.
The organisation will operate kiwi’s production plant in Werlte, Germany, understood to be the world’s largest operating power-to-e-methane plant with a proposed power of 6.3MW.
The acquisition also gives Hy2gen access to a pipeline of further projects with a total capacity of 300MW for electrolysis and methanation, and it can utilise established industry connections and expand them further.

“The integration of kiwi AG into Hy2gen AG allows us to benefit from their technical expertise and brings us a lot closer to our goal of becoming an independent market leader in the production of renewable hydrogen and its derivatives.”
Hy2gen’s Country Manager for the DACH region, Matthias Lisson, added, “We have already received a commitment from our renowned partner, Plug Power, to purchase the full production volume. It is important for me to mention that production processes will be maintained and that we will continue to rely on the expertise of all our employees.”
The kiwi plant in Werlte is located near another Hy2gen project in Friesoythe. It’s expected that the production of renewable hydrogen and methanol will begin in Friesoythe in Q4 2027 under the project name NAUTILUS, being mainly used to decarbonise shipping. Both sites are close to various North Sea ports, ensuring rapid product sales to international customers.
In November (2023), Hy2gen signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Amogy to collaborate on renewable ammonia and explore its use as a maritime fuel. The two organisations will participate in joint development projects and research how best to secure the safe usage of ammonia on board maritime vessels.
