Huadian breaks ground on 295MW green hydrogen–methanol plant in China

According to reports, state-owned power generator plans to use 450MW of wind capacity to power 295MW of electrolysers, producing up to 19,000 tonnes of green hydrogen and 100,000 tonnes of green methanol annually once operational.

The Tiaobingshan demonstration project will include an 80MW energy storage system to enhance supply stability and flexibility.

H2 View understands Huadian’s initiative is among China’s first national pilot projects for green liquid fuel technology.

Tieling, a major thermal coal base in Liaoning, benefits from established generation capacity and grid infrastructure. The region also hosts wind farms, with additional solar projects under development.

Huadian’s venture reflects a wider national strategy to channel surplus renewable energy into Power-to-X fuels, with methanol singled out by policymakers as an “encouraged” investment.

China’s transport and shipping sectors are already adopting the fuel, with global shipping majors including COSCO and Maersk betting on methanol for decarbonisation.

With other Chinese plants now achieving EU-compliant certification, including Shuimu Mintal Damao, projects like Tieling could eventually serve not only domestic demand but also export markets under the Renewable Energy Directive (RED III).
