Commissioned by Hamburg Hafen und Logistik (HHLA), the Linde built station will be developed within the scope of HHLA’s Clean Port and Logistics cluster to fuel hydrogen-powered heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and terminal equipment to test them in operation.
Expected to begin operations in 2023, set to be located at the Port’s Container Terminal Tollerot (CTT), the station will utilise a high-pressure ionic compressor to compress hydrogen up to 450 bar.
The companies have said the equipment will offer refuelling to straddle carriers, empty container stackers, forklift trucks, reach stackers, terminal tractor units, and trucks.
H2 View understands the project aims to examine how hydrogen can be used to reliably supply power to harbour technology and port logistics as ports look to decarbonise.
“Our commissioning of Linde Engineering to build the hydrogen filling station is the next milestone for our hydrogen activities in the Clean Port & Logistics cluster,” said Dr. Georg Böttner, Head of HHLA’s Hydrogen Network.
“With the construction of the filling station, the required infrastructure is now being created to speed up the transition to emissions-free heavy goods logistics and port operations, and to drive forward the decarbonisation of logistics,” Böttner added.
The plans for the Port of Hamburg refuelling station come shortly after Air Products’ and Mabanaft’s announced intentions to build Germany’s ‘first’ large-scale import terminal in the Port to provide the country with hydrogen.
Dr. Alexander Unterschütz, Executive Vice-President Components at Linde Enegineering, commented, “We are delighted to support this forward-looking project with our technology. Efficient, and most importantly, safe refuelling of various hydrogen vehicles is essential for sustainable and seamless port operations.”
