Under the agreement, Sumitomo will integrate H2Pro’s electrolysers at ‘the multiple hundreds of MW level’ for use primarily in green ammonia projects.

In the initial phase of the agreement, Sumitomo and its partners will collaborate with H2Pro on operation for its technology pilot and demonstration, also suppling H2Pro with various manufacturing equipment.

In return, H2Pro will provide Sumitomo with data to supports its plan to establish a pipeline of green hydrogen projects. By the second half of this decade, Sumitomo will incorporate H2Pro’s electrolyser technology to go towards the production of ‘several hundred tonnes’ of green hydrogen per day.

Talmon Marco, CEO of H2Pro, said, “From pilot system deployment to the eventual integration of our commercial class system into their pipeline, we will benefit tremendously from Sumitomo’s operations expertise and diverse industrial experience.”

Yoshihiko Ichikawa, General Manager of Sumitomo Corporation’s Hydrogen Business Department, added, “At Sumitomo Corporation, we are preparing for this transition by working to employ the most efficient means of green hydrogen production into our clean energy pipeline. Our partnership with H2Pro propels this vision forward.”

Sumitomo purchased a 1.4MW electrolyser from ITM Power in 2021, which would be modified to ensure hydrogen supply pressure is below 10 bar, ensuring it is in accordance with Japan’s High Pressure Gas Safety Act.

In 2021, H2Pro secured  $22m investment to push forward the production of its water splitting device that could produce green hydrogen at $1/kg.

The company claims its developed device can reach 95% efficiency, operate at higher pressures and cost significantly less than a standard electrolyser.
