Grid constraints halt Hy2Gen 270MW green ammonia project in Norway

The Iverson eFuels plant had been expected to produce 200,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year by 2030, but was cancelled amid uncertainty over when new grid capacity could become available.

Norwegian grid operator Statnett withdrew the project’s power allocation in late 2025, but Iverson eFuels only confirmed the project’s cancellation this month (March).

“Statnett has stated that new capacity may only become available once the upgraded grid is completed, expected in the period 2033–2035. At the same time, there is no guarantee as to when the upgraded grid will be ready,” Iverson eFuels said in a statement.

Significant resources had been invested in the development of the project.

Scrapping the plant is a setback Hy2Gen’s plans to develop a 2GW hydrogen and derivatives portfolio backed by a €47m ($53.5m) funding round raised by shareholders in April 2025.

The plant had secured zoning approval in September 2025 and was undergoing technical development directed at reaching a final investment decision.

The company will explore constructing a data centre at the cancelled plant’s site, so the work and resources invested in the Iverson project can be utilised to create new activity, according to a statement.
