The development is part of the newly launched Essar Energy Transition (EET), which plans to invest up to €3.6bn (£3.18bn) in developing low-carbon energy projects worldwide.

It will be at the heart of the global hydrogen energy transition and provide the connecting infrastructure to enable significant volumes of green ammonia to be imported into the UK.

The terminal is expected to enable the import and storage of more than 1Mtpa of green ammonia for onwards distribution into the UK or conversion back to green hydrogen for supply to the North West’s industrial customers.

The hydrogen produced will be used by a wide range of industries in the region, including as a sustainable fuel for marine shipping and to help decarbonise energy usage and therefore aligning with the UK’s Net Zero ambitions.

Prashant Ruia, Director Essar Capital, said, “The new terminal, provides the connecting infrastructure to enable Essar’s ambition to be a major hub of low carbon energy innovation and a leader in production globally.”

In February (2023), EET was formed with aims to range across hydrogen production technologies, decarbonisation, biofuels for road and aviation, and infrastructure project, the EET investments are intended to contribute to the North West of England becoming a leading post-carbon industrial cluster in Europe.

EET announced it will invest $2.4bn (£2bn) at its Stanlow site, where its joint venture with Progressive Energy, Vertex Hydrogen is developing a 1GW blue hydrogen production site in the North West UK hydrogen cluster HyNet.

The terminal will also benefit from Port of Liverpool’s combination of competitive geographical location, deep water access and maritime infrastructure which is capable of handling large gas carrier vessels.

Michael Gaynon, Chief Executive at Stanlow Terminals, said, “By investing in new energies infrastructure and building a secure supply chain of green ammonia into the UK, we are building on our expertise in storing and blending of bulk liquids to put the North West economy at the forefront of the UK’s energy transition to Net Zero.”
