In partnership with SGN Commercial Services, the two companies have completed the first step of converting a legacy natural gas holder site into a future green hydrogen storage and distribution facility, aiming for a Net Zero future.
Plans for the Inverness hub were revealed exactly a year ago today by H2 Green, with the hub anticipated to scale to produce eight tonnes of hydrogen per day.

The site will be positioned next to Inverness’ rail head to supply clean fuel to the hydrogen trains that operate in this region, with Getech hoping to establish 500MW of new geoenergy and green hydrogen assets by 2030.
Scotland’s railways could be diesel-free by 2040, following the Holistic Hydrogen Approach to Heavy Duty Transport (H2H) project received funding from Ofgem’s Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF).

Along with supporting Scotland’s rail, the hub could be used for the bus service, heavy goods vehicles and innovative practises in the city, such as heat and medical-grade oxygen for hospitals.
Getech and SGN say the facility will kick start the decarbonisation of the railway across the Scottish Highlands, which is a prime location because of the natural resources the region holds for producing green hydrogen through wind.
With the aim of developing more facilities, Dr Jonathan Copus, Getech CEO, said, “we continue to work closely with stakeholders, including the Highland Council, to establish a network of green hydrogen hubs across the Scottish Highlands.”
The Highland Council support Getech and H2 Green’s efforts and previously contributed £100,000 ($123,000) towards the costs of the Inverness hub and are also working on plans for an administrative unit in the UK.

Dr Nigel Holmes, CEO of the Scottish Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association, said, “there is a fantastic opportunity to generate even more hydrogen and put Scotland on a clear path to reach Net Zero by 2045.”
