The new GE gas turbine has the capability to burn up to 50% by volume of hydrogen when blended with natural gas, the company has claimed.

Eric Gray, President and CEO of GE Gas Power, said, “To be able to deliver such an incredible package of technology, safely and on-time, is a testament to what we were able to achieve together and will unlock new levels of power generation stability, emissions performance, and reliability across the FPL system.”

On May 25, this year (2022), two GE projects were awards $12m from the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management, to develop and test components with 100% hydrogen fuel stream in gas turbines.

H2 View understands that FPL is currently developing a pilot project to test the use of green hydrogen to replace a portion of the natural gas at its power plant in Okeechobee County, Florida, which also uses GE technology.

Eric Silagy, Chairman and CEO at FPL, said “FPL has worked for more than two decades to systematically modernise our fleet of power plants by tearing down aging, inefficient plants and replacing them with ultra-efficient, clean energy centres like the one in Dania Beach.”
