H2 View understands that guarantees of origin are the only recognised proof that gas has been produced from renewable energy sources, without which producers cannot sell or market it as renewable.
The certification marked a step in building a transparent and traceable hydrogen market in Finland, according to Heli Haapea, Service Manager at Gasgrid.
“There is demand for guarantees of origin because renewable gases play a significant role in achieving Finland’s and Europe’s carbon neutrality goals,” Haapea said. “With guarantees of origin, we are building a sustainable and reliable foundation for the use of all clean gases.”
While renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO) under EU law determines whether hydrogen qualifies as a renewable fuel for regulatory targets, guarantees of origin provide the market-based traceability that underpins commercial claims of renewable origin.
In Finland, Gasgrid acts as the administrator of the gas guarantee of origin register and issuer of both national and European certificates.
“The register and systems have been developed so that we are ready to issue guarantees of origin for biogas, e-methane, and hydrogen,” explained Haapea.
“Development work is also continuing so that the market can develop for all clean gases. We are currently preparing for the first guarantees of origin for e-methane.”
Herkko Plit, CEO of P2X Solutions, said the award gives the clean energy firm a “clear competitive advantage” in the hydrogen market.
P2X has already installed a Sunfire electrolyser at the Harjavalta site in 2024, and secured a five-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Fortum to source renewable energy earlier this year.
Green hydrogen will reportedly be delivered to Danisco Sweeteners for use in xylitol production – a sweetener used in food and beverages.
