Gas Networks Ireland eyes feasibility studies for green hydrogen pilot project

Under an agreement with the Corrib joint venture between Nephin Energy and Vermilion Energy, the state-owned gas network operator will undertake feasibility studies and technical assessments for a facility at the Bellanaboy Bridge Gas Terminal.

The project could use existing infrastructure, connectivity, and renewable energy potential for hydrogen production. Specifics about the prospective project, including technology choices or a development timeline, have not been revealed.

Corrib is also assessing a range of energy opportunities for the site.

David Kelly, CEO of GNI, said the agreement could help inform how hydrogen might play a role in existing gas grids.

“It is important to understand how the gas network could safely and efficiently accommodate fuels such as green hydrogen. This collaboration will support that learning process, contribute to our wider hydrogen initiatives, and help inform future network transition planning,” he said.

In June 2025, GNI and the UK’s National Gas launched a plan to explore a hydrogen-capable interconnector between the UK and Ireland.

The UK and Irish governments also agreed to step up collaboration on hydrogen transmission and storage infrastructure in July 2025.
