Made up of EDF, EDF Renewables, J-POWER and Yamna, the consortium expects to build around 4.5GW of wind and solar coupled with battery storage as well as 2.5GW of electrolysis on the land.

Awarded by state-owned Hydrogen Oman (Hydrom), the land located in the Dhofar Governorate could host the production of one million tonnes of green ammonia per year.

Having signed the project development sub-usufruct agreements, the consortium will hold the rights to develop, build, own, operate and maintain the project for 47 years.

By 2050, Oman’s renewable energy capacity could allow it to produce four times the energy it needs. As of 2023, five of the 10 projects planned in the Sultanate targeted green hydrogen exports, with estimates that Oman could export some six million tonnes of ammonia by 2030.

Hydrom is expected to award another two land blocks, following the first round of land allocations in 2023, which saw Amnah, bp Oman and Oman Shell all be awarded development lots.

Launched in 2022, owned by Energy Development and Oman (EDO) and regulated by the Ministry of Energy and Minerals (MEM), Hydrom is set to develop the “master plan” for Oman’s green hydrogen sector.
