FCAB begins testing Latin America’s first hydrogen freight locomotive

Latin America’s “first” hydrogen-powered freight locomotive, according to FCAB, will run in Antofagasta and is expected to support the region’s decarbonisation strategy by lowering scope one and two emissions by 50% by 2035.

The locomotive reportedly delivers 1,000kW of power via its hybrid engine, while reducing total weight by around 30 tonnes compared to conventional diesel models.

FCAB also built its own hydrogen refuelling station at its Patio Norte railway yard for the test operations.

Data from the pilot will help regulators and industry partners assess whether hydrogen traction can scale across Chile’s mining and logistics sector – the former accounting for more than 14% of national GDP in 2021.

“The progress of the pilot programme is being closely monitored, with input from a range of stakeholders,” FCAB said in a statement.

“This collaborative approach aims to ensure that the train’s pilot project generates the required information to inform potential future investments in sustainable transport solutions.”

The rail operator added that the initiative will “help shape the future of rail transport in Chile and beyond.”
