Located in Emden, Germany, the project is being delivered by a consortium of companies, including Ludwig Freytag, Gebrüder Neumann, and MBN. Drees & Sommer was commissioned last year to oversee project steering, approvals, and engineering management.
The plant will form part of EWE’s Clean Hydrogen Coastline (CHC) initiative, which also includes a 50MW electrolyser in Bremen, hydrogen storage in a repurposed salt cavern in Huntorf, and upgrades to regional pipeline infrastructure.
EWE expects to begin operations in Emden by the end of 2027.
H2 View understands that the plant will be one of Europe’s largest, once operational.
Overall, the wider CHC initiative has received a total investment of over €800m since its inception.
Backed by the German government and recognised as an Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI), the project has been designed to link production, storage, transport and green hydrogen use in Northern Germany.
