The approval concerns the initial phase of its $6bn, 1m tonnes per year green hydrogen and green ammonia project in Point Tupper, Nova Scotia.
It paves the way for construction to commence in the first half of 2023 for the ‘first’ independent green hydrogen and green ammonia project in North America.
Trent Vichie, CEO and Founder of EverWind, said, “As a first mover in Atlantic Canada, EverWind is establishing a globally competitive clean energy hub, unlocking the immense local, national, and international opportunities presented by green hydrogen and green fuels.”
Laurel Broten, CEO of Invest in Canada, added, “Hydrogen is a critical tool in the energy transition and in how we meet our Net Zero goals by 2050.”
The Point Tupper site – offering production capacity of more than 10m tonnes per year of green ammonia – aims to become a convenient hydrogen hub, connected via rail, road and pipelines, in addition to its port facility.
The company is now applying for leases on 137,000 acres of land to develop a 2GW onshore wind farm, expected to power the second phase of its green hydrogen production facility by 2026.
EverWind remains on track to deliver green ammonia to German off-takers, E.ON and Uniper, by 2025, therefore achieving the goals outlined in the Canada-Germany Hydrogen Alliance signed in August 2022.
The agreements involve purchasing 500,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year from the Point Tupper hydrogen hub.

Last year EverWind announced its intentions for the Nova Scotia hydrogen hub.
The company says that by 2030, the project could reduce domestic and international carbon emissions by more than 4m tonnes a year through the production of green hydrogen.
