Escalating hydrogen disruption leaves just six stations online in California

As of 7 April, more than 45 stations are down or unavailable, according to the trade group Hydrogen Fuel Cell Partnership (H2FCP), which told hydrogen vehicle drivers to plan their refuelling journey by checking station statuses.

H2FCP’s station map showed just six stations are currently online, with 21 unavailable, and another 24 marked as offline.

“Several hydrogen stations are not available due to a disruption of the gaseous hydrogen supply chain that began in February 2026,” H2FCP said.

Five stations operated by Iwatani and Chevron are being supplied by low-pressure trailers, significantly reducing the amount of hydrogen they will receive. “You may not receive full fills during this time,” H2FCP added.

The majority of stations still online are supplied with liquid hydrogen. However, station operator True Zero has reported an “additional disruption” in its liquid hydrogen supply. Only two True Zero stations are marked as online.

According to the California Air Resources Board, there were over 14,000 registered fuel cell vehicles in the state by April 2025.

These outages have significantly increased since the end of March, when over 60% of California’s 52 hydrogen stations were offline.

The disruptions came after a compressed hydrogen trailer exploded in the City of Colton in San Bernardino County, killing one person and injuring another.

According to local media reports, the victims were servicing a truck hauling the trailer owned by oil and gas firm Pilot Company when it exploded. The cause of the explosion has not been confirmed.

After safety incidents, hydrogen trailers are typically withdrawn from service across operators while manufacturers investigate the cause. The model of the trailer involved in the explosion is unconfirmed.

The disruption highlights the fragility of hydrogen refuelling logistics, particularly for stations dependent on delivered gaseous hydrogen, with no clear end in sight.
