Electric Hydrogen wins 240MW electrolyser deal for Texas green ammonia project

The firm will provide two 120MW plants to Synergen Green Energy for its flagship green ammonia project planned for Texas, as part of a front-end engineering design agreement.

The project will use Topsoe ammonia synthesis technology and is designed to produce up to 210,000 tonnes of ammonia per year, with a start-up targeted for Q4 2028, subject to final investment decision.

It plans to supply the hydrogen and nitrogen compound for maritime applications as well as export to industrial users in Europe and Asia, although no firm offtake agreements have been announced.

For Electric Hydrogen, it adds to several recent deals for large-scale green hydrogen projects in North America and Europe.

The firm claims its electrolyser plants can produce some of the cheapest green hydrogen on the market, thanks to high stack-level efficiency and reduced EPC costs due to its factory-built method.

“Our HyprPlant technology makes it possible for customers like Synergen Green Energy to produce radically low-cost hydrogen today,” said Electric Hydrogen CEO, Raffi Garabedian.

However, it is yet to operate one beyond 10MW in scale. Its first 100MW plant, which will be used by e-fuels maker Infinium in Texas, US, is due to begin producing molecules before the end of 2025.

The Synergen deal could lend itself to further collaboration. The firm is part of Indian industrial and manufacturing conglomerate Skeiron Group, which holds companies in renewables development, logistics and infrastructure.

It also has plans to build a 210,000 tonne per year plant in Nebraska, with operations targeted for 2029.

“The unique approach that Electric Hydrogen brings to electrolyser design and manufacturing aligns with Synergen’s own standardisation and modular design philosophy,” said Pranav Tanti, CEO of Synergen. “We look forward to building a strong and enduring collaboration with our partners at Electric Hydrogen.”
