The proposed project plans to take advantage of DEWA’s existing green hydrogen production facility at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, in Saih Al-Dahal.

H2 View understands the project includes a feasibility for the construction of a hydrogen fuelling station, contributing to achieving the goals set out in the Dubai Green Mobility Initiative 2030, aimed at stimulating the use of sustainable transport.

“We are pleased to sign this MoU with ENOC Group to use green hydrogen, which is one of the environmentally friendly energy sources and represents one of the pillars of a sustainable future that depends on accelerating the transition to Net Zero carbon emissions,” said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of DEWA.

Al Tayer added that DEWA was “moving steadily” to prepare a roadmap for a green hydrogen strategy, set to be implemented in phases, in line with its strategy to diversify energy sources and increase investment, by “supporting innovation, research and development in energy storage technologies, including green hydrogen.”

Saif Humaid Al Falasi, Group CEO of ENOC, commented, “The agreement underpins the Group’s efforts to nurture public-private partnerships to achieve Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy 2050 as well as lay the foundation for a green economy and lead the adoption of sustainable energy solutions.”

A report by Roland Berger, unveiled in January (2023), said the Middle East is positioned to become a “frontrunner region” in the low-carbon hydrogen economy, but challenges related to infrastructure, strategies, and regulations stand in the way.

The report noted that over 60 hydrogen production projects in the Middle East have been announced in recent years, with 80% of them focusing on green hydrogen production, however, said that an overarching strategy direction is missing, saying no Middle Eastern country having released a defined strategy to support, with “tangible steps”, their hydrogen ambitions.
