Consortium targets Nordic-Baltic green hydrogen supply for Germany

Northern Europe Energy Group (Northern), Securing Energy for Europe (SEFE), and the Baltic Sea Hydrogen Collector (BHC) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at supplying green hydrogen from the Nordic-Baltic region to Germany.

BHC is a consortium made up of network operators Gasgrid Finland and Gascade Gastransport, as well as Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners’ offshore energy subsidiary.

The value chain would primarily use Northern’s planned 100-000 tonne-per-year green hydrogen plant in Liepaja, Latvia, scheduled for production by 2030, alongside the firm’s three other projects in the wider region.

German state-owned energy trader SEFE would buy and resell the green hydrogen, while BHC’s planned offshore pipeline would provide a transport corridor. The pipeline was backed with €15.3m ($17.8m) from the EU in late 2025, with completion expected by the early-to-mid 2030s.

Dr Hans Dieter Hermes, Executive Vice President Hydrogen & Clean Energies at SEFE, said the strategic project would contribute both to Germany’s climate ambitions and European energy resilience.

The country has recently bolstered efforts to secure green hydrogen from eastern Europe, as well as further afield, furthering its goal of imports meeting up to 70% of its 2030 hydrogen demand.

The German government recently part-funded Bulgarian OEM Hydrogenera’s installation of a 2MW electrolyser in Ukraine, with the hydrogen earmarked for German industry, and is funding a newly revealed African Development Bank initiative encouraging hydrogen and derivative projects on the continent.
