
The systems will produce hydrogen for Acme Group’s 100,000 tonnes-per-year green ammonia facility in the Duqm Special Economic Zone. The 80MW of electrolysers are set for deployment on the 80km2 site for the project’s first phase.
When its second and third phases are completed, it is expected to produce up to 900,000 tonnes-per-year.
In March 2024, Norwegian chemical company, Yara International, entered a non-binding agreement with ACME for the offtake of 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia tonnes-per-annum, the full annual production capacity of the project’s first phase
This comes as Chinese manufacturers move into the global electrolyser market.
Despite that Chinese-made systems could undercut Western-made technologies on capital costs, the International Energy Agency recently noted that once transport, tariffs, and local installation costs are factored in, the installed cost of Chinese electrolysers abroad approaches parity with Western systems.
Oman’s special economic zone is a site of increasing activity in the green hydrogen and ammonia space.
Meranti Green Steel is targeting final investment decision on a 2.5 million-tonne-per-year hydrogen-based iron project in the zone, having lined up offtake for this entire capacity from European majors, including Thyssenkrupp Materials Trading.
