Set to be delivered by FOSS National Leasing in the next three to four months, Charbone has said the vehicles will be able to fill up at its hydrogen refuelling station, currently under construction at the Sorel-Tracy Quebec facility.

The company has said it intends to announce further refuelling facilities across Canada, in addition to a proposed corridor between Quebec City, Canada, and Detroit, Michigan, US, where Charbone has announced future hydropower plant acquisitions.

Additionally, Charbone has said it has partnered with RESATO for the exclusive distribution of RESATO’s hydrogen refuelling station systems in Canada.

The company hopes the move to lease the hydrogen-powered vehicles will promote green mobility in Canada, as well as study the reliability of the Hyundai vehicle in Quebec weather conditions.

“This is also an opportunity to show there is no reduction of autonomy in winter with alternate fuels, and that our future subsidiary, Charbon Lab, will have the ability, along with local academic partners, to study and report on the reliability of the Hyundai NEXO in Quebec weather,” said Dave Gagnon, Chairman and CEO of Charbone.

The Hyundai NEXO has previously made headlines, setting the then world record for the longest distance travelled in a hydrogen-powered vehicle on a single tank in 2021, travelling 887.5km.

This record was subsequently beaten by the Toyota Mirai, travelling 1,360km on a single tank.

Ken Maisonville, Director of Sales at Hyundai Auto Canada, commented, “The addition of Hyundai NEXO vehicles in Charbone’s fleet will be a giant step forward in realising the viability of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in Canada, and Quebec in particular.

“Decarbonising mobility as we know it is a monumental undertaking, and we applaud Charbone for their bold work on this front and raising much needed awareness on energy transition possibilities.”
