Under the agreement, the companies will further invest into the development of the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley in Huelva to jointly optimise decarbonisation plans, including the production of green hydrogen and other renewable gases.

The agreement will allow Cepsa and Fertiberia to independently meet Spain’s Hydrogen Roadmap which sets a target for 25% of hydrogen consumption in industry to be renewable by 2030.

Javier Goñi, CEO of Fertiberia, said, “This alliance will make Huelva’s green hydrogen production more competitive, becoming a source of opportunities for multiple companies along the value chain. It will also further the full decarbonisation of our assets and our positioning as a leader in green ammonia and sustainable crop nutrition solutions.”

As part of the agreement, the production of renewable fuels, such as green methanol and ammonia, in Huelva and other Spanish provinces will be considered.

The Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley will have 2GW electrolysis capacity. 1GW in Campo de Gibraltar (Cadiz) and another 1GW in Palos de la Frontera (Huelva) and the production of up to 300,000 tonnes in Cepsa’s Energy Parks.

Green hydrogen production will begin in 2026 and be used for companies own industrial consumption.

The agreement will create a pioneering circular economy for hydrogen production, ensuring the supply of the new renewable energy vector to the areas entire industrial fabric and strengthening synergies between their plants.

Maarten Wetselaar, CEO of Cepsa, said, “Our agreement with Fertiberia is a major step forward in our commitment to green hydrogen as a key energy vector to decarbonise our own activity and that of our consumers.”

The new alliance is part of Cepsa’s 2030 Positive Motion strategy, through which the company is transforming itself to become a benchmark in the energy transition, leading sustainable mobility in Spain and Portugal, as well as the production of renewable hydrogen and advanced biofuels.

Cepsa recently partnered with EDP, a leader in renewable energies through its subsidiary EDP Renewables, on the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley.

Cepsa and Damas recently signed an agreement to promote the development of green hydrogen in intercity road transport in Spain and further promote sustainable mobility.

This is the first partnership of its type, and its objective is to incorporate buses powered by this sustainable fuel into the Damas fleet of vehicles, which will run on several passenger transport lines in the provinces of Seville, Huelva, and Cadiz. The first green hydrogen-powered buses are scheduled to travel these routes in 2025.
