Beginning in Q1 2024 and supported by the US Department of Energy (DOE), the solution will be built on the new 13-litre Cat® C13D engine platform, leveraging its performance, packaging and fuel flexibility.

Caterpillar will develop a transient-capable system for off-highway applications, serving as the prime contractor, providing engine research and development, and system integration. The project will be delivered at the company’s facilities in its US Chillicothe and San Antonio, Texas bases.

Caterpillar’s initative will demonstrate how ‘state-of-the-art’ control systems and electric-hybrid components can help hydrogen-fuelled engines meet or exceed the power density and transient performance of traditional diesel engines.

Steve Ferguson, Senior Vice President at Caterpillar Industrial Power Systems, said, “Every off-highway application has its own unique duty cycles, lifecycle demands and performance expectations, and this complexity is driving the development of a wide range of power solutions for the energy transition.

“One size does not fit all, which is why we’ve engineered flexibility into the C13D engine to serve as our platform of the future.”

The C13D engine enables the use of renewable liquid fuels such as 100% HVO, B100 distilled biodiesel, and even up to B100 standard biodiesel by working with the local Cat dealer. In addition to using hydrogen, its core architecture is designed for the future development of spark-ignited natural gas capabilities.

It will be available for early OEM pilots in 2025 and scheduled for production in 2026, targeting a wide range of off-highway equipment, such as rock crushers, screeners and grinders, and large industrial pumps.

Last year (2022), Caterpillar revealed it had been establishing how hydrogen storage and fuel cells will be integral to its future sustainable mining strategy.

The company announced it was intending to develop green hydrogen production, natural gas and 100% hydrogen reciprocating engine power generation, fuel cell power generation and expanded energy storage systems as part of an ‘alternative energy island.’
