BZI becomes lead investor in 200MW green hydrogen project in Malaysia

BZI has signed a strategic partnership agreement with Nova Re Suria (NRES), a Malaysian energy and project developer, for an undisclosed investment amount.

Located in Paka, the plant will feature 200MW of alkaline electrolyser capacity, powered by grid-supplied renewable energy, and is expected to produce almost 30,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year at full capacity.

China Jiangsu Guofu Hydrogen Energy (GUOFUHEE)) will support the promotion and global distribution of green hydrogen and its derivatives. PGH2P’s project partners aim to supply both domestic industrial users and international buyers.

Additionally, China Energy Engineering Corporation (CEEC) has been appointed for the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract to develop the hydrogen facility.

Dr. Shamir Kumar Nandy, Group Managing Director of BZI, said the investment in Malaysia reflects “continued commitment to pioneering high-impact clean-energy investments, while reinforcing our ambition to support Malaysia’s energy-transition agenda.”

BZI noted that Malaysia’s hydrogen generation market is growing at roughly 4.8% a year, while global hydrogen equipment markets are expanding more than three times faster – underscoring the risk of Malaysia falling behind unless PGH2P accelerates.

However, the government has set a target of producing two million tonnes of blue hydrogen annually, signalling a continued emphasis on higher-emission, fossil-based hydrogen with CO2 capture as a bridge to green hydrogen.
