Lobby group, the Hydrogen Transport Forum (HTF), made up of BMW, Hyundai, and Honda, said recent geopolitical instability was bolstering the case for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.
In a statement, HTF called on the government to incorporate hydrogen within its National Electric Vehicle Strategy, which is up for review in 2026.
“Australia’s transport system will be stronger and more resilient if we pursue a diversified strategy that includes hydrogen, battery electric vehicles and other emerging eco-friendly technologies,” HTF said.
Since conflict unfolded in the Gulf, oil prices have increased from around $60–$70 per barrel to around $100.
The group said Australia’s AUD $40bn ($28.4bn) of oil imports make it susceptible global supply disruption exposes households and businesses to cost hikes, while the country’s renewable energy resources could strengthen its energy and fuel resilience.
Initiatives such as the National Hydrogen Strategy and the Driving the Nation fund, which aims to expand EV and hydrogen refuelling infrastructure, are currently supporting policies of the National Electric Vehicle strategy.
While BMW, Hyundai, and Honda have each contributed towards hydrogen mobility infrastructures in Australia, it remains underdeveloped. The National Electric Vehicle strategy is yet to feature any mandates for the uptake of alternative fuel vehicles.
HTF launched in May 2025 as a reaction to the Australian government withdrawing AUD $75m ($48m) in funding allocated to a scheme to support deploying hydrogen-powered trucks and refuelling stations.
The call comes as companies across sectors reel from current events in the Middle East, with Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz set to send oil and energy prices skyrocketing.
Hydrogen’s role in mobility has come under increasing scrutiny in recent years. Critics argue battery electric vehicles are a more efficient and cost-effective use of valuable green electrons.
