Bilfinger to deliver key EPC scope for BP’s 100MW Lingen green hydrogen plant

With commissioning for the project planned in 2027, Bilfinger will prefabricate, assemble, and install key piping and plant components, as well as high-voltage power systems.

The German engineering firm expects to deploy over 200 workers at the site during peak periods.

The deal adds to Bilfinger’s green hydrogen work, which includes the integration of a 100MW electrolyser at RWE’s 300MW Lingen project.

BP took final investment decision on the project in 2024 to produce up to 11,000 tonnes of green hydrogen for consumption in its own refineries and other industrial customers in the region.

The plant will feed into the 9,000km hydrogen core network being constructed across Germany, which aims to connect production and import sites with industrial users.

Last year, the oil and gas firm selected the clean tech arm of US engine maker Cummins to provide the 100MW of PEM electrolysers needed for the project.

However, it is likely to stand as one of the company’s few clean hydrogen developments. BP has been quickly pivoting back towards fossil fuels, which will see it limit further hydrogen and carbon capture projects.

The firm recently pulled out of a large-scale UK blue hydrogen project, as well as a major planned green hydrogen and renewable hub in Australia’s Pilbara region.

It also previously said it had stopped 18 early-stage hydrogen projects.
