Bangladesh election: tackling energy import dominance

Bangladesh goes to the polls today [12 February] with the slowdown in industry and energy – and development of renewables and industries such as hydrogen – among the major political talking points.

The eighth-most populous country globally has a strong reliance on energy imports to meet the growing needs of its 177 million people – and such is the scale of demand, the focus has continued to be on traditional sources such as coal and oil.

The dependence deepened when the country chose not to mine domestic coal, largely on environmental and social grounds, ironically making it more dependent on imported coal. But slowly the dial is shifting.
