With plans of commencing large-scale green hydrogen production at the right by 2025, the expansion is for the first phase of the project which is expected to eventually make up part of 400MW of green hydrogen and ammonia production capacity in the South American country.

In May (2022), ATOME announced it had signed a 60MW power purchase agreement (PPA) with Paraguayan national power firm, ANDE, which has now been doubled to 120MW of 100% renewable power for the project.

In addition to the expansion plans, ATOME has appointed Spanish engineering company, Urbas Energy-Ingeser as front-end engineering design (FEED) contractor for the project, in cooperation with TSK and Swiss-based Casale.

With the full FEED study expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2023, ATOME hopes to reach final investment decision (FID) in the same quarter to be on track to deliver the fully operational plant within 30 months.

“We are grateful for the confidence that ANDE is showing to ATOME by increasing our power supply to 120MW , enabling Paraguay to become the leader on the continent in the fast-growing green hydrogen economy,” said Olivier Mussat, CEO at ATOME.

Commenting on the appointment of the FEED consortium, Mussat said the company is confident they can deliver on time and on budget.

Mussat continued, “The enlarged 120MW project with its early date to commence full production will benefit from significant economies of scale, making our production of green ammonia even more attractive in the global markets looking to source green energy and green fertilisers.”

Juan Antonio Acedo, President and CEO of Urbas, said, “We are honoured to have been selected by ATOME to carry out the FEED for this landmark project in Paraguay and in Latin America, and proud to participate and to contribute to one of the most reliable green ammonia projects in the world.”

Frederico Zardi, CEO of Casale, added, “We are honoured and excited to be on board of this ambitious and landmark project for South America which, capitalising on our long-term experience and leveraging our newest green technologies, aims at establishing a world-scale ammonia and hydrogen production plant in a fully sustainable way, leading the path towards further developments in the region.”
