The two companies have established the National Ammonia Corporation (NAC), which will be headquartered in San Jose, Costa Rica, and has a mandate to develop projects across Central America and the Caribbean, with an initial focus in Costa Rica.
The central American country has a 99% penetration of renewable electricity and a strong agriculture sector which is one of the highest fertiliser consumers per hectare across the world.
Its strategically important position with ports on both the Atlantic and Pacific, only separated by 200kms of land bridge, makes it a logistically good location.
Olivier Mussat, CEO of ATOME, said, “With the Villeta project in Paraguay, we have taken a significant industry lead that we are able to roll out and replicate under the right conditions.
“Our partnership with Cavendish offers ATOME a very attractive opportunity with a strong local partner to accelerate the development of a pipeline of international scale projects with a strong local demand for green fertilisers.”
In January, ATOME completed the $900,000 acquisition of 75 acres of land for the Villeta green hydrogen and ammonia plant in Paraguay.
The project is planned to have 120MW capacity, allowing the facility to produce up to 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year.
