The construction of the hydrogen facilities at CP’s Calgary and Edmonton railyards will advance the CP’s Hydrogen Locomotive Programme, which aims to build North America’s first line-hail hydrogen powered freight locomotive.
The infrastructure at each site is set to include a 1MW electrolyser, compression, storage, and dispensing unit. The Calgary electrolyser is intended to be powered by part renewable electricity from CP’s existing 5MW solar power facility at its headquarters.
Construction of the two sites is planned to start later this year, with production and supply of hydrogen being provided to locomotives in 2023.
Kyle Mulligan, Assistant Vice-President Operations Technology at Canadian Pacific, explained, “The Calgary and Edmonton fuelling stations will be essential to bringing zero-emissions hydrogen locomotive propulsion into reality as part of CP’s commitment to sustainable and responsible operations.”
CPS’s Hydrogen Locomotive Program has partly funded by a 2021 $15m award from Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA).

North American Hydrogen Summit
