Asia saw the implementation of 73 new stations, 11 in North America and 45 new stations were opened in Europe.
Asia is the stand-out region with 455 stations in total, led by Japan (165), South Korea (149) and China (138).Hydrogen refuelling is now available in 37 countries , with Columbia, Cyprus and Israel being the latest additions.
By the end of 2022, 814 hydrogen refuelling stations were in operation worldwide.
South Korea was the country adding the largest number of new stations, while 70 of North America’s 89 stations were in California.

Europe had 254 hydrogen refuelling stations in total by the year end, with 105 in Germany, 44 in France, UK and The Netherlands having 17 each and Switzerland, 14.

Last year, Shell announced plans to build its ‘first’ hydrogen refuelling network in Asia under a joint venture with Shanghai Shenergy.
The plan is to build six to ten stations in Shanghai and Yangzte River Delta over the next five years, with the intention to scale up to 30 stations across the Yangzte River Delta by 2030.

Plans are already in place for an additional 315 hydrogen refuelling station locations worldwide.
In December, Calvera Hydrogen announced plans to develop eight hydrogen refuelling stations across Europe expected to begin operating between 2023-2024.

Shell recently opened up on the closure of its UK hydrogen refuelling stations in an exclusive H2 View webinar, after it was reported that its stations in Cobham, Gatwick and Swindon had closed in 2022.
Paul Bogers, Vice-President of Hydrogen at Shell, told viewers that the company found it difficult to operate its UK refuelling stations reliably.
