Signed alongside the B20 Summit in Bali, Indonesia, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) involves a pre-feasibility study to assess the potential for cooperation between the companies to develop a clean ammonia and hydrogen value chain.

H2 View understands the agreement includes potential carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) at Pertamina Group’s existing facilities, as well as other agreed potential locations.

According to Aramco and Pertamina, the study will explore investment viability and jointly developing commercialisation options, including business organisation and commercial structures for ammonia and hydrogen in Indonesia.

Expected to be conducted over the next two years, the outcomes of the study may be developed further in the future.

Mohammed Al Qahtani, Senior Vice-President of Downstream at Aramco, said, “As a company, our ambition is to achieve Net Zero scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions across our wholly owned operated assets by 2050. Our work in developing new ammonia and hydrogen energy pathways will be pivotal in achieving that goal while helping to advance an affordable, equitable and more sustainable transition for all.”

In 2021, Aramco signed an MoU with Modern Industrial Investment Holding Group and InterContinental Energy to see the development of a green hydrogen and green ammonia project in Saudi Arabia.

Nicke Widyawati, President Director of Pertamina, commented, “The energy transition should not jeopardise energy security and affordability, especially for countries that are still dependent on fossil fuels.

“That’s why Pertamina has developed a decarbonisation program through CCUS. Hydrogen and Ammonia are expected to play a key role in a future climate-neutral economy, enabling emission-free power generation, heavy transport, heating and industrial processes.”
