Ameresco wins contract to equip Kimberly-Clark with hydrogen dual-fuel boilers

The UK energy solutions provider will act as Engineering Service Provider for the design and construction to help install five new hydrogen/natural gas boilers at the Andrex and Kleenex maker’s Barrow-in-Furness and Northfleet sites.

The boilers will be fuelled with volumes of hydrogen produced by Carlton Power’s 35MW Barrow and Hyro’s 15MW Northfleet green hydrogen plants that have been selected for revenue support by the UK government.

Under the Hydrogen Allocation Round One, both green hydrogen plants have secured a contracts-for-difference style incentive, guaranteeing them a fixed strike price of £241/MWh. This will top up revenues when the market reference price, linked to natural gas, falls below that level and claw back payments when it rises.

With the hydrogen production and boilers expected to become operational in 2027, Kimberley-Clark said the installations could reduce natural gas consumption by 50%.

Kimberley-Clark signed offtake agreements for the hydrogen earlier this year, in a move it said could reduce carbon emissions by 28,500 tonnes per year.
