Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Anantara and Countrywide will jointly study the development of the facility using solar power in the Karimun Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in the Riau Archipelago.

According to the companies, the planned concept and feasibility study will cover an initial 10MW electrolyser, producing around 1,650 tonnes of hydrogen annually, which is expected to be used to meet local demand before looking to export to other countries in Asia and potentially Europe.

Subject to the outcomes of the studies, it is hoped the financial close for the facility can occur in 2024, with a view for green hydrogen production to commence in 2025.

“Green hydrogen will play a major role in a future Net-Zero economy for Indonesia and Asia more broadly, creating emission-free power generation, transportation for mining, and industrial processes,” said Geoffrey Drucker, Managing Director of Countrywide and Executive Director of ReNu Energy.

Drucker continued, “We couldn’t be more excited to be working with Anantara to begin the development of green hydrogen into the region, and help Indonesia strive towards Net Zero emissions.”

A report by Wärtsilä Energy, released in September (2022), highlighted the potential for hydrogen to be for in Southeast Asia’s seasonal balancing in power plants as the region strives to meet Net Zero.

Boyd White, Chairman of ReNu Energy, added, “Since acquiring Countrywide last February, the company has made significant progress advancing its portfolio of clean and renewable energy projects.

“This MoU for potential green hydrogen supply in Southeast Asia, together with our announcement last week of the term sheet with HESTA for the investment of up to $100m in our green hydrogen projects, is a fantastic endorsement of Countrywide’s green hydrogen capabilities, and aligns with ReNu Energy’s aim of contributing to a low-carbon future.”
