Under the agreement, the two companies will deliver a 20MW green hydrogen pilot project, which could scale-up to 200MW, based in northern Chile – a region suited for renewable energy production from solar and wind power.

Ohmium’s PEM electrolysers will be used to generate hydrogen for the copper smelting process, along with other thermal processes in the mines. H2 View understands they could also be used to fuel trucks transporting minerals to the nearby port in Mejillones.

“H2 Green Mining is leading the way in transforming the copper mining sector for a sustainable future,” explained Arne Ballantine, Ohmium CEO.

Julio Bertrand, Founding Partner in Star Energy Partners and former CEO of CAP, Gasco and ENAP, said, “H2 Green Mining has an exciting roadmap for the future, and we are looking forward to collaborating with Ohmium to leverage the power of fossil-free energy and help decarbonise Chile’s copper mining industry.”

Last September (2023), H2 Green Steel agreed to partner with Vale to jointly study the feasibility of green industrial hubs in Brazil and North America. The two organisations would explore the production of low-carbon steel value chain products.
