2G Energy revealed it had partnered with Enbridge and CEM Engineering to install its hydrogen-powered CHP system, which is set to be fuelled by an existing electrolyser on site.

Once installed, 2G says the system will enable Enbridge to evaluate the feasibility of designing, building, operating, and maintaining a 115kW hydrogen-fuelled system to support or replace up to 90% of the facility’s energy.

According to the companies, the overarching goal is to power the facility of a mix of hydrogen and natural gas, or 100% of either fuel source.

H2 View understands, the CHP system will consume approximately 78,000kg of hydrogen a year, eliminating around 133 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) annually.

“This is an important example of the investments Enbridge Gas is making across multiple markets to green the natural gas grid while continuing to meet the demand for safe, reliable, and affordable energy. ”

The project with 2G follows on from a grid-inject hydrogen pilot with Cummins at Enbridge’s power-to-gas facility in Markham which became operational in January this year (2022).

The project has received support from government officials in Ontario. David Piccini, Ontario’s Minister of the Environment, Conservation, and Parks explained the project comes as an example of the role clean technologies can plan in the province’s future.
