Solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) technology is reportedly 30% more efficient than PEM and alkaline technologies according to Ceres, but true cost competitiveness could be realised at large-scale green ammonia plants. The hydrogen was delivered as part of the GROHW project, a collaboration between the Netherlands’ largest energy supplier Essent, Nefit Bosch, Firan, and Witteveen+Bos. The initiative aims to reduce CO2 emissions in the Netherlands, and marks one of the first implemented green hydrogen projects in the country. Off-grid power hubs could in theory cut emissions from port operations and accelerate the UK’s transition to Net Zero. The UK government will not reallocate funding from hydrogen projects awarded support under its first subsidy scheme if they fail to proceed, H2 View understands. The clarification follows Scottish Power’s decision to pause development of its UK green hydrogen projects, including two that had been selected under the first Hydrogen Allocation Round (HAR1). The tender, originally announced in September 2024, will see both nations commit €400m ($464.6m) to the scheme, which could see Australian producers export volumes of green hydrogen, green ammonia, and green methanol to Europe. Aimed to support the development of green hydrogen projects, the double-sided auction will see German-funded investment vehicle Hintco purchase hydrogen through long-term contracts and resell it to the highest bidder. The German OEM confirmed in June that it would buy GHS’ 35-bar A- and X-Series technology and a test facility in Skive, Denmark, amid court-led administration following cash flow struggles and failed restructuring efforts. Ahead of its 2028 FCEV launch with Toyota, BMW is preparing a new system that is 25% more compact, delivers higher power density and efficiency, and integrates more easily into future models, combining Toyota components within BMW’s own system architecture.
