ProtonH2’s ISHG process stimulates natural hydrogen generation in depleted oil reservoirs. The firm has said this unlocks trapped hydrogen and converts mineral reactions underground into a steady supply of fuel. It involves injecting dioxygen (O2) into oil wells which reacts with hydrocarbons to generate high-concentration hydrogen syngas. Syngas can either be sold or separated into hydrogen for sale. However, the process does produce carbon dioxide (CO2). The company says ISHG “naturally sequesters” 15-20% of the CO2. The SASHA Coalition and ten industry signatories warned that the STIP, part of the EU’s Clean Industrial Deal (CID), must not focus solely on transitional fuels such as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and LNG, but also support zero-emission technologies through dedicated hydrogen funding, e-fuel incentives, and stronger refuelling infrastructure. The 23,000 square metre facility in Herning, which has been under development since 2022, was originally due to come online in 2024 after securing a €94m ($108.7m) grant from the EU Innovation Fund. Industrial gas major BP is seeking a Development Consent Order (DCO) from the government after the Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council approved landowner South Tees Group’s (STF) plan to build a data centre. However, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has delayed the decision from today (30 October) until 4 December to allow time for further consideration. The agreement announced today (30 October) formalises Plug’s electrolyser selection earlier this year and supports the development of a large-scale sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), eSAF, and green diesel project backed by the Uzbek government. The US clean energy company will supply its GenEco PEM electrolyser modules, ranging in capacity from 100MW to 875MW.
