German steelmaker Salzgitter AG will push back the expansion phases of its €3.5bn ($4.1bn) hydrogen-based steelmaking project by up to three years due to regulatory delays, though its initial 100MW phase remains on track for 2026. The project at Salzgitter’s Flachstahl site will bring alkaline electrolysers, a direct reduction plant and an electric arc furnace online as planned in 2026, but subsequent stages have been pushed back, the company confirmed to H2 View. According to reports, state-owned power generator plans to use 450MW of wind capacity to power 295MW of electrolysers, producing up to 19,000 tonnes of green hydrogen and 100,000 tonnes of green methanol annually once operational. The French testing and certification body joins Belgium’s Vinçotte, Germany’s TÜV SÜD and TÜV Rheinland, and Spain’s SGS as one of five companies accredited to conduct audits for official RFNBO validation. Hintco said the relaunch targets projects that were not advanced enough during the pilot phase, broadening participation in the green fuel market. It comes alongside increased funding and extended timelines across other H2Global tenders. The German government-backed investment vehicle behind the H2Global scheme raised the funding across its tenders earlier this month, boosting the regional lots from €484m ($570m) to €580m ($683m) each. Under a €7.1m ($8.6m) contract, Metacon will act as the prime integrator for the project, providing the packaged system, auxiliary equipment, and managing delivery to the customer. The Indian engineering firm’s RENU vertical signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Saudi power generation major for the renewables and grid scope of the Yanbu Green Ammonia Project. The scope includes solar PV, wind, and battery energy storage systems, along with substations and transmission lines that will power the 4.4GW electrolysis facility and ammonia conversion.
