The High Coast to West Coast (HiWhyV) valley plans to link potential hydrogen users in Västernorrland (the High Coast Hub) with the renewable abundant West Coast of Sweden (the West Coast Hub), where plans are progressing for green hydrogen production. The link could produce up to 132,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year across nine production sites, according to the European Commission. Mario Draghi’s report on the future of European competitiveness laid out clear recommendations on how Europe can boost its economic growth. But speaking at Davos, Merz said only around 10% of its proposals have been put in place. “We have to do much more than that,” he said. “The entire energy system has to be reformed. Japan-headquartered Honda’s decision to end hydrogen fuel cell production with US conglomerate General Motors (GM) brings an unceremonious end to one of the automotive sector’s most high-profile hydrogen collaborations. Launched in 2017, the Fuel Cell System Manufacturing (FCSM) joint venture was intended to prove that scale, shared intellectual property and combined purchasing power could push fuel cell vehicles towards commercial reality. The clean fuels panel at Davos 2026 today heard hard-hitting comments from CEOs and economists as affordability was repeatedly stressed as the key issue affecting scale up and mass-market acceptance. Through its new H2Site Norway arm the Bilbao-based firm will supply onboard systems that crack ammonia into hydrogen for use in fuel cells or blending in engines. The move is aimed at accelerating demonstration projects with Norwegian shipowners, shipyards, and offshore operators, amid growing government support for maritime decarbonisation. H2Site has been building and operating ammonia crackers since 2023, and has carried out maritime-focused projects addressing integration with fuel cells and engines. The funding from Horizon Europe aims to back projects that could bring innovations closer to market, covering hydrogen production and storage through to fuel cells. €25m ($29.3m) is reserved for Hydrogen Valleys – the EU’s cluster initiative, designed to ramp up regional hydrogen value chains. This leaves €80m ($93.7m) available for various elements of hydrogen technology advancement, including €16m ($18.7m) for green hydrogen production, €17.5m ($20.5m) for hydrogen storage and distribution, €25m for transport, €16m for heat and power, and €5.5m ($6.4m) for crosscutting. The LC30 generator, which AFC hopes can displace diesel generators, offers a 50% mass reduction, 45% reduced volumes, while being 20% efficient than the company’s previous versions. It is also slated to have an increased operating range, from -20°C to +50°C, and can accommodate 100KW fuel cell to increase output on demand.
