H2-View News: StormFisher acquires RCV, plans hydrogen-based methanol production

The Canadian clean energy firm announced the acquisition today (October 15), stating that its approach will be “simpler, cleaner, more reliable, and more resilient” than Recyclage Carbone Varennes’ (RCV) original biomass gasification process. The Québec project is expected to produce around 72,000 tonnes per year, and is scheduled to begin operations in 2028. It will also capture over 100,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. The acquisition follows a court-approved process involving RCV. StormFisher will repurpose the site into North America’s “first” large-scale low-carbon methanol facility. “We have long wanted to establish ourselves in Québec, and we are delighted to have found [...]

H2-View News: Lhyfe opens first green hydrogen production site in Germany

The Lhyfe Schwäbisch Gmünd facility marks its fourth production site and first outside France. The plant features 10MW of installed electrolyser capacity, producing up to 1,200 tonnes of green hydrogen per year. Lhyfe claims it is the largest commercial site in Germany dedicated to green hydrogen ‘in bulk’. The plant is powered by renewable electricity from hydro, wind, and solar purchase agreements, and secured renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO) status under EU rules in September. The site will supply heavy transport and industry players in Baden-Württemberg, which funded the project with the EU, among others. It will also supply [...]

H2-View News: ZeroAvia ships hydrogen fuel cell to US defence customer

The SuperStack Flex system reportedly delivers over 1.2kW/kg specific power, a sustained 150kW output, and 175kW peak output. The defence customer may deploy the system in unmanned aerial vehicles, with potential applications extending to small aircraft, maritime, and ground systems. Notably, ZeroAvia highlighted that the fuel cell has passed airworthiness testing and is ready to be used in actual aircraft trials. In the final stages of system testing, the SuperStack provided power back to ZeroAvia’s Propulsion Centre of Excellence in Everett, Washington. The aviation tech firm said it generated enough power to offset the entire building’s consumption. Additionally, ZeroAvia used [...]

H2-View News: Magnon to supply biogenic CO2 for hydrogen-based e-methanol plant in Spain

Biogenic CO2 captured from its operational biomass plant in Puertollano will be used in an e-methanol facility that’s being developed in partnership with Dutch firm Power2X and ErasmoP2X. Green hydrogen will be produced via electrolysis, powered by ErasmoP2X’s 1GW solar complex in Saceruela. The green hydrogen is expected to be transported around 60km through the Spanish Hydrogen Backbone network to the Puertollano plant. “The project will strengthen Spain’s position as a European hub for green molecules, generate new economic opportunities and quality jobs in Castilla-La Mancha,” Magnon’s statement said. It added, “[The project will] attract investment in energy innovation and [...]

H2-View News: Plug validates VSParticle catalyst that ‘paves the way to $1/kg green hydrogen’

Conducted in collaboration with the University of Delaware’s Centre for Clean Hydrogen, Plug claims the test paves the way to “the production of $1/kg green hydrogen.” VSParticle’s catalyst layers were tested under real-world PEM operating conditions. While less iridium is used, the technology maintained commercial performance, according to Plug, and met durability targets. Specifically, it showed less than 2.3 µV per hour of performance loss over 8,000 hours of operation, roughly equivalent to a 10-year system lifetime. The nanoporous catalyst layer was produced using VSParticle’s spark ablation nanomanufacturing process. “Our dry deposition process isn’t just an alternative to spray coating; [...]

H2-View News: Metacon acquires Hynion Sverige assets from bankruptcy estate for $315m

The Swedish energy technology firm purchased the assets for SEK 3.5m ($315m), although they were originally procured by the Hynion AS subsidiary for approximately SEK 67m ($6m). Components such as high-quality station equipment will help fill gaps or replace parts in Metacon’s currently hydrogen refuelling station projects under construction. “The acquisition allows Metacon to cost-effectively complement any needs in existing projects, including aftermarket, as well as to use the components in future projects,” the firm said in a statement. Financing the acquisition was made possible through the planned resale of individual components. Christer Wikner, President and CEO at Metacon, said [...]

H2-View News: Europe’s RFNBO rules drive up project costs but must stay in place: Hy2gen CEO

Europe’s green hydrogen rules may push up project costs, but rethinking them now would halt investment and limit renewables expansion, according to Hy2gen CEO Cyril Dufau-Sansot. It’s an increasingly fringe view in the current landscape. Particularly as the German developer’s flagship European projects face wildly different power supply options and highly contrasting output due to the EU’s RFNBO rules. H2-View News: CIP completes 70% stake in H2Apex’s 100MW Lubmin hydrogen project

The Danish investor agreed to inject €15m ($16m) in the first 100MW phase of the EU-backed Lubmin project through its Energy Transition Fund. The project, supported by EU IPCEI funding of €167m ($179m), is targeting an annual production of up to 10,000 tonnes of hydrogen in its first phase, with construction slated to begin in 2026. CIP and H2Apex aim to demonstrate large-scale green hydrogen production and feed it into Germany’s planned Flow pipeline network. CIP’s investment is expected to bridge the funding gap ahead of full EU disbursement. H2Apex CEO, Peter Rößner said the closing “represents a milestone for [...]

H2-View News: Uniper and VNG begin installing Sunfire electrolyser stacks at German hydrogen plant

The pressurised alkaline electrolyser will use renewable wind power and water to produce up to 4,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year, once it’s operational at the end of 2025. Around 2,700 tonnes of that hydrogen will be piped 25km through a repurposed natural gas pipeline to TotalEnergies’ refinery in Leuna, where it’s set to replace some fossil-based hydrogen in refining processes. The delivery of Sunfire’s electrolyser stacks marks the “transition from construction to implementation,” according to Uniper’s Xenia Papst, and is the “result of months of hard work by the entire team.” The Senior Commercial Manager for Hydrogen added, [...]

H2-View News: Hydrogen Science Coalition questions impact of UK’s first hydrogen grid injection

Centrica and National Gas yesterday (October 13) completed the UK’s first hydrogen injection into the National Transmission System (NTS). The blended gas is combusted in turbines at the power plant to generate electricity for the national grid. However, the Hydrogen Science Coalition (HSC) highlighted that a 2% blend cuts emissions by less than 0.7%, due to hydrogen’s lower energy density by volume compared to methane. Even at the upper limit of around 20% hydrogen in existing pipelines, the group said total carbon savings would amount to around 7%, which HSC stressed is “a negligible contribution to decarbonisation.” Still, some industry [...]
