H2-View News: BP, Iberdrola eye May start-up of 25MW green hydrogen plant
Castellón Green Hydrogen SL said the project, being constructed at BP’s Castellón refinery, had reached 90% assembly completion, with 100% of equipment now on site. This includes the 25MW Plug Power PEM electrolyser system. The JV stated that it will commence testing in May to monitor the operation and performance of the plant. The €70M ($81.2m) project, equally owned by the British oil firm and the Spanish power company, will produce up to 2,800 tonnes of green hydrogen per year to displace grey hydrogen already used in the refinery. Having received a €15m ($17.4m) Spanish subsidy, the plant will be [...]
H2-View News: Powerhouse Energy seeks MENA growth with new partnership
Green Gecko, which has been identifying prospects for PHE’s technology, will act as its agent for projects in Bahrain, Egypt, Kuwait, and Oman. According to PHE, Green Gecko has identified sites in the region where its high-temperature pyrolysis (HTP) technology could be used for processing tyres, elastomers, and polymers into clean energy products. The company says that its system can convert non-recyclable waste into syngas, which can be purified into hydrogen or used as a feedstock in other technologies. Paul Emmitt, PHE CEO, said the agreement strengthens the firm’s position in the MENA market. “We look forward to working with [...]
H2-View News: UK hydrogen and CCS targets face major shortfall as costs bite, says DNV
The independent energy and assurance firm said cost remains the “fundamental difficulty” limiting hydrogen production in the country. It also said carbon capture and storage (CCS) faces similar cost barriers. DNV shared its thoughts in its annual Energy Transition Outlook briefing, on which Hari Vamadevan, Senior Vice-President of DNV, said both markets have seen a downward trend, despite the technology being largely ready for deployment. “I think the technology is there. It’s got everything to do with cost,” he noted. DNV forecasts UK hydrogen production reaching 750,000 tonnes per year by 2030, far below the government’s ambition to deploy 10GW of hydrogen [...]
H2-View News: Norway’s first hydrogen valley secures €21m in EU funding
The project, which stretches across central Norway, aims to establish a fully integrated value chain covering production, distribution, storage, and diverse end-use. Dubbed NorHyWay, it is led by research institutes, Sintef and Hydrogeni, and Renergy, a renewable energy cluster based in the city of Trondheim. 16 industrial partners in energy, transport, logistics, technology, and the maritime sector are also involved. By linking some of the country’s hydrogen initiatives, it aims to produce and use 37,081 tonnes of hydrogen annually by 2035 to potentially cut 345,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. The Renergy cluster said hydrogen facilities run by its member, [...]
H2-View News: Hydrogen Europe urges ‘substantial improvement’ to Industrial Accelerator Act
The group said the focus on “Made in Europe” criteria for hydrogen technologies, including electrolysers, was welcome but that the scope had been reduced compared with earlier drafts. This includes electrolysers of “Union origin”, which the Commission defines as covering the EU and European Free Trade Association countries — Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Hydrogen Europe argues this would exclude countries like Canada, Japan, the UK, the US, and South Korea. The Commission said the measure would support domestic manufacturing in the face of growing competition from China. However, Hydrogen Europe’s primary criticism focused on the Commission’s lead market proposals, [...]
H2-View News: Industry coalition urges IMO states to approve delayed net-zero framework
Backers of the regulation said the framework’s implementation would provide alignment on emissions and strengthen investment signals for new fuels and technologies. This comes after the IMO postponed an October 2025 vote on the framework, which was widely expected to unlock demand for green hydrogen-based fuels like ammonia and e-methanol. 57 countries voted in favour of the delay, 49 opposed, and 21 abstained. First approved in draft form in April 2025, it would impose a carbon levy on ships above 5,000 tonnes from 2028. The call to action said the net-zero framework represents a “hard-fought compromise” needed to accelerate Net [...]
H2-View News: Topsoe boss steps down early as clean fuel sales reach 20% of revenue
Roeland Baan, who was due to step down at the end of May, will make way for Elena Scaltritti as the new President and CEO from Thursday (5 March), after the “satisfactory” results. Topsoe said the fast-tracked transition came at Baan’s own request. “This alignment on the strategic direction and planning between the Board of Directors, our owners, senior management, and the wider organisation is clear and decisive, making it possible to execute a transition faster than planned,” he said. Baan has held the role since 2020 and oversaw the company’s transition from Haldor Topsoe as it increased its focus [...]
H2-View News: EU plans ‘Made in Europe’ rules for electrolysers in green hydrogen projects
Billed as the EU’s response to growing competition from cheaper overseas imports, the IAA will introduce Made in Europe and low-carbon requirements for public procurement and funding schemes. Electrolysers have been included alongside other net-zero technologies such as batteries, solar panels and wind turbines, which could be covered by Made in Europe criteria. The proposal suggests future European Hydrogen Bank auctions will need to use electrolysers originating in the EU, including stacks. The move comes amid growing concerns that Europe could lose further clean-tech manufacturing capacity to China, which already dominates sectors like solar panels and is quickly scaling electrolyser [...]
H2-View News: EU-funded solid oxide electrolyser project launched in Spain
Named Desiree, the project will design and build a 40kW multi-stack prototype system to address durability, efficiency, and circularity issues related to SOECs. The €4m ($4.6m) Horizon Europe co-funded initiative is set to run through June 2029 and will involve 12 organisations from across Europe, including the Spanish National Research Council, the University of Zaragoza, and the Polytechnic University of Turin. Its prototype system will aim to develop advanced nanoscale materials to reduce the operating temperature of SOEC systems, typically upward of 700 °C, which could reduce susceptibility to component degradation, improving reliability and longevity. Additionally, the initiative will establish [...]
H2-View News: Norwegian start-up raises €15m for domestic solid-state hydrogen microgrid tech
The capital, raised in a round led by venture capital firms NordicNinja and Voima Ventures, could support the company’s industrialisation plan and a manufacturing facility for its battery technology, which could scale seasonal energy storage. Photoncycle’s system uses solar energy generation to provide electricity to households. Excess energy can be used to electrolyse water and produce hydrogen, which is stored underground in a solid state. During periods of low solar generation, the hydrogen can be converted back to electricity through a fuel cell. The company has revealed few technical details about the system, but argues it could replace water-based heating [...]
