H2-View News: Japan stands at ‘inflection point’ for hydrogen: WEF

Given its structural reliance on imported fuels and exposure to energy security and decarbonisation imperatives, hydrogen provides an industrial and strategic pathway. But progress is not without friction, it finds. Infrastructure remains incomplete across production, transport and end-use sectors, green hydrogen and its derivatives still entail cost premiums and long-term offtakes, essential to investment clarity, have not materialised at the scale required. That’s despite policy direction and mobilised funds thanks to the country’s updated Basic Hydrogen Strategy and Hydrogen Society Promotion Act. It still requires “coordinated, system-wide progress” according to WEF. Encouragingly, it possesses the industrial depth, engineering capability and [...]

H2-View News: H2Apex, East Energy eye small-scale green hydrogen JV as German mandates kick in

H2Apex and East Energy Group are forming a joint venture (JV) to develop four 5MW green hydrogen projects across Germany, following the government’s backing of usage mandates in mobility. Their Hanseatic H2 JV will develop standardised electrolyser plants to produce renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO)-compliant green hydrogen. Initially, four projects are planned in Northern and Eastern Germany, responding to what the developers describe as a “significant increase” in green hydrogen demand. H2-View News: HIF Global extends e-fuel deal with Antarctic tourism operator

The agreement extends a deal first inked in October 2024 to fuel Antarctica21’s ten guest transport vessels with HIF’s synthetic gasoline for a second consecutive season. Antarctica21 operates the Zodiac boats to transport tourists from its cruise ship for on-ice expeditions off the coast of Chile. The e-gasoline is produced at HIF’s first plant in Chile, Haru Oni, which has been operating since 2022. The plant uses wind energy to power electrolysis for hydrogen production, which is synthesised with recycled carbon dioxide into e-fuels. HIF CEO, Víctor Turpaud, said the extended deal would allow the firm to show how regional [...]

H2-View News: Cadent unveils plans for 150km UK hydrogen pipeline

The H2East pipeline would be largely underground and run from Immingham in the Humber to Newark in Nottinghamshire, and form part of the wider east coast hydrogen backbone development Project Union. It would connect hydrogen production sites in the region with industrial end-users. Cadent intends to open consultations on the project to hear views on its proposals and planned route. Project Director, Adam Knight, said, “We will be listening carefully to what businesses and local communities tell us in the coming months. Their views will help shape our proposals, including the details of the route.” It would mark the first [...]

H2-View News: Uniper inks 500,000-tonne green ammonia offtake deal from India

Under a binding agreement, Am Green will supply up to half of the green ammonia produced at its facility in Kakinada, with first deliveries expected by early 2028. Uniper green ammonia will be used as a feedstock and potential hydrogen carrier to decarbonise chemicals, fertilisers and other hard-to-abate industrial sectors. The deal was formalised in Ahmedabad, in the presence of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Michael Lewis, CBE, CEO of Uniper, said the contract would help unlock cost-effective decarbonisation. “Green ammonia stands out as one of the most promising solutions to decarbonise CO2-intensive production of [...]

H2-View News: Thyssenkrupp to source non-prime steel from Stegra’s flagship hydrogen-based plant

Under the multi-year agreement, Stegra will supply non-prime steel to the German steel and aluminium processor for use across multiple European industries. Non-prime steel is a byproduct of steelmaking that does not meet the highest quality specifications for some applications, but remains suitable for a wide range of industrial uses. While the exact volume was not disclosed, Stegra said the total tonnage covered by the agreement will be in the “high-six-digit” range. The steel will be produced at Stegra’s currently under-construction green steel plant in Boden, Sweden. Green hydrogen produced by over 700MW of electrolysers will be used to reduce [...]

H2-View News: Norsk e-Fuel unveils €1.5bn Finnish hydrogen-based eSAF plans

The two Nordic firms inked a memorandum of understanding that will see Norsk e-Fuel conduct a feasibility study for the eSAF project to be located next to Outokumpu’s stainless-steel mill in Tornio, Finland. Outokumpu would supply carbon monoxide side streams from its existing ferrochrome production as a feedstock to be combined with green hydrogen to produce 80,000-100,000 tonnes of eSAF. The project would be led by Norsk e-Fuel, drawing on its network for project development and financing. They estimate the project will cost €1.2bn-€1.5bn ($1.4bn-1.7bn). Subject to the feasibility study, the company anticipates taking final investment decision around 2028, with [...]

H2-View News: EU weighs CBAM suspension for fertilisers, prompting warnings from clean ammonia firms

France and Italy are seeking temporary exemptions for fertilisers from the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) days after its launch, drawing warnings from clean hydrogen-based ammonia importers that the move could undermine competitiveness. CBAM, which entered force on 1 January, levies carbon emissions on imports, including steel and fertilisers, to level the playing field with European producers. H2-View News: UK membraneless electrolyser firm picks up Shell support

The non-exclusive deal will see Shell Global Solutions International pay for a technology feasibility study, evaluating aspects including performance data analysis and process safety assessment. Shell will also provide a techno-economic evaluation. The agreement builds on a relationship dating back to 2021, which later saw Shell Ventures lead Supercritical’s first £14m financing round in 2025. Luke Tan, CPO and co-founder of Supercritical, said the partnership marks a significant step in the company’s commercialisation roadmap, and that it is “directly addressing the cost and complexity barriers facing the renewable hydrogen market”. Supercritical says its “ultra-efficient” patented technology removes any dependency on [...]
