H2-View News: South Korean researchers develop two-litre ammonia engine

The Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM) said the direct injection ammonia engine, developed with Hyundai and Kia’s Electrification Engineering Center, could overcome challenges with gaseous ammonia fuel such as unstable fuel output and emissions, thanks to the use of high-pressure liquid injection. The research team improved the engine’s ignition system and optimised the timing of fuel injection and valve operation. It also created an after-treatment system to “minimise” harmful NOx and unburnt ammonia emissions. These changes significantly improved thermal efficiency and power output, KIMM said. “This engine technology could serve as a breakthrough in addressing the challenges of [...]

H2-View News: Denmark fast-tracks hydrogen pipeline with lowered capacity booking requirement

Last October, Energinet pushed back its plans to construct the pipeline from 2028 to 2031, stating that despite “large potential” for the infrastructure, projects with “significantly different degrees of maturity” forced it to delay the development. Read more: Denmark-Germany hydrogen pipeline faces three-year delay However, the Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities has said today (January 31) that it is proposing to “reduce the capacity booking requirement,” so therefore the “first phase of the pipeline can proceed based on capacity from a single project.” Instead of waiting for multiple buyers to sign long-term agreements for the Esbjerg to Germany [...]

H2-View News: Taiwan strengthens global fuel cell ties at hydrogen summit

At Hyvolution Paris, THFCP signed four Memoranda of Understandings (MOUs) with representatives from Ukraine, Denmark, Poland and France. The deals could also strengthen Taiwan’s position in global hydrogen and fuel cell projects. By partnering with international stakeholders, Taiwan and its partners could jointly apply for funding, participate in global supply chains or contribute to large-scale projects beyond their own markets. Lin Jo-Chen, THFCP CEO and Deputy Director of Taiwan Institute of Economic Research’s (TIER) Research Division 1, reportedly claimed Taiwan is a country with “arguably the most comprehensive resources for developing hydrogen fuel cells in the world.” Lin added that [...]

H2-View News: Lhyfe’s second Swedish 10MW green hydrogen plant backed with €11m

The plant in Vaggeryd, Jönköping County, will have the capacity to produce up to 4.4 tonnes of green hydrogen per day and will supply local refuelling stations in the region that are currently under construction, as well as industrial heating and production processes. Lhyfe expects to generate the site’s first kilogrammes of hydrogen in 2027, subject to the granting of foreign investment, permitting and a final investment decision (FID). The funding from Klimatklivet, Sweden’s climate investment programme, will finance the project’s development and design phases, equipment costs and construction work. It represents around 35% of the project’s €31.5m ($32.7m) investment. [...]

H2-View News: Tata Steel’s hydrogen-ready pipes approved for 100 bar transport

The steel major said its API X65 ERW pipes were qualified by the Italian testing, inspection and certification (TIC) organisation RINA-CSM, making them viable for hydrogen infrastructure. While pipelines have been slated as one of the most low-cost ways of transporting hydrogen over long distances, hydrogen embrittlement – where hydrogen atoms diffuse into steel, weakening its structure – is a key challenge when using steel. Tata said its pipes, processed at its Khopoli plant using steel made at its Kalingangar, achieved “all the critical properties required for hydrogen transportation.” The firm claims to be India’s “first” steel firm to demonstrate [...]

H2-View News: P2X Solutions secures five-year renewable power deal for 20MW green hydrogen plant

H2 View understands that hydrogen production at Harjavalta has already begun after Sunfire installed a 20MW electrolysis plant at the facility last February. However, the Finnish hydrogen producer has said it’s “still ramping up production.” Read more: 20MW Sunfire electrolysis plant installed in Finland The PPA signed between P2X and Fortum is structured to align with the EU’s Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) regulations, which set requirements for matching renewable energy production and consumption in green hydrogen production. Furthermore, the PPA is set to expire in 2029, when the monthly matching basis ends in Europe and requirements transition to [...]

H2-View News: Hesse unveils €300m plan for 280km hydrogen pipeline network

Hesse will be connected to national hydrogen transport routes via the H2ercules, Flow and Werne-Eisenach Line pipelines. Still, additional pipelines will be required to “further distribute hydrogen across the region,” the Hessian Ministry for Economy and Energy said online. A total of 15 regional gas network operators, potentially including Open Grid Europe (OGE) and Terranets bw GmbH, conducted feasibility studies for a hydrogen network in Northern and Central Hesse. Specifically, the study outlined a pipeline corridor extending from Lahntal to the Kassel area, supplemented by local branch lines. The proposed route will consist of newly constructed sections and repurposed gas [...]

H2-View News: Pennsylvania’s ‘all-of-the-above’ energy plan promises $49m in hydrogen funding

Announced at Pittsburgh International Airport, where Keystate and CNX Resources plan to accelerate hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production through a proposed $1.5bn partnership, Shapiro said the plan would incentivise the construction of new energy projects. “Pennsylvania has long been a national energy leader,” he said. “But right now, we’re letting other states outcompete us and we’re losing out on jobs, new investment and innovation – this has to change.” The Lightning Plan, developed with labour unions, the energy industry, and environmental groups, will fund new projects through an updated manufacturing tax credit and streamlined energy project approvals. Regional [...]

H2-View News: European Commission awards €250m to hydrogen infrastructure projects

The EU has stated the funding will “help alleviate investment risks associated with this nascent market” and “complement hydrogen policy framework.” Studies being carried out for the Spanish Hydrogen Backbone have been supported with up to €32.5m ($33.8m), whilst Nordic Hydrogen Route Feasibility and Design studies and BarMar-H2Med Hydrogen Interconnector studies both secured more than €28m ($29m). Furthermore, studies for Italy’s national hydrogen pipeline and the EmilHY France-Germany hydrogen power plant conversion project each secured over €20m ($21m) in funding. The initiatives selected by the EU have all been granted the status of Important Projects of Common Interest (IPCEI) and Projects of Mutual Interest (PMI). The [...]
