H2-View News: BKW impairs coal asset, eyes 40% share in hydrogen-capable German gas plant
The non-cash write-down relates to its 33% share in the 726MW Wilhelmshaven power plant and will drag the firm’s reported 2025 EBIT to CHF 540–560m ($680.3–705.5m), from a previously guided CHF 650–750m ($818.9–944.8m). Instead, it will look to reallocate capital to acquire up to 40% of a hydrogen-capable gas-fired power plant under development in Hamm. The Hamm project is being advanced by municipal utility firm Trianel, which operates an existing 850MW gas-fired combined-cycle power plant, made up of two units. The firm has previously announced plans for an additional 500MW hydrogen-ready gas unit at the Hamm site, which would initially [...]
H2-View News: Why Honda is about to stop making fuel cells with GM
Japan-headquartered Honda’s decision to end hydrogen fuel cell production with US conglomerate General Motors (GM) brings an unceremonious end to one of the automotive sector’s most high-profile hydrogen collaborations. Launched in 2017, the Fuel Cell System Manufacturing (FCSM) joint venture was intended to prove that scale, shared intellectual property and combined purchasing power could push fuel cell vehicles towards commercial reality. Honda brought decades of fuel cell R&D and a long-term belief in hydrogen as a zero-emission pathway, while GM added manufacturing scale and access to the US market. H2-View News: ‘Nobody is ready to pay for clean fuels’ says TotalEnergies CEO
The clean fuels panel at Davos 2026 today heard hard-hitting comments from CEOs and economists as affordability was repeatedly stressed as the key issue affecting scale up and mass-market acceptance. Elaine Buckberg, former Chief Economist at General Motors, set the scene, outlining how renewable diesel “is incredibly expensive” and urged the industry to focus on implementing clean fuels in hard-to-abate sectors – citing sustainable aviation fuel as “number one” in the pecking order. Patrick Pouyanné, CEO at TotalEnergies, said the debate has shifted from sustainability to affordability and security, exacerbated by geopolitical and economic challenges. H2-View News: H2Site opens Norwegian unit to deploy ammonia-to-hydrogen tech in shipping
Through its new H2Site Norway arm the Bilbao-based firm will supply onboard systems that crack ammonia into hydrogen for use in fuel cells or blending in engines. The move is aimed at accelerating demonstration projects with Norwegian shipowners, shipyards, and offshore operators, amid growing government support for maritime decarbonisation. H2Site has been building and operating ammonia crackers since 2023, and has carried out maritime-focused projects addressing integration with fuel cells and engines. Its core IP centres palladium-alloy membranes for reactors and separators to remove hydrogen from streams, including natural gas and ammonia. While several maritime engine makers are developing ammonia-fuelled [...]
H2-View News: Clean Hydrogen Partnership launches call for funding proposals in €105m round
The funding from Horizon Europe aims to back projects that could bring innovations closer to market, covering hydrogen production and storage through to fuel cells. €25m ($29.3m) is reserved for Hydrogen Valleys – the EU’s cluster initiative, designed to ramp up regional hydrogen value chains. This leaves €80m ($93.7m) available for various elements of hydrogen technology advancement, including €16m ($18.7m) for green hydrogen production, €17.5m ($20.5m) for hydrogen storage and distribution, €25m for transport, €16m for heat and power, and €5.5m ($6.4m) for crosscutting. Applications open on 10 February and must be submitted before 15 April, via the EU’s Funding [...]
H2-View News: AFC builds first 30kW liquid-cooled hydrogen generator
The LC30 generator, which AFC hopes can displace diesel generators, offers a 50% mass reduction, 45% reduced volumes, while being 20% efficient than the company’s previous versions. It is also slated to have an increased operating range, from -20°C to +50°C, and can accommodate 100KW fuel cell to increase output on demand. AFC says the unit will achieve regulatory approval, progressing to certification and pre-production. It has not yet specified a timeline. It comes as the culmination of a 10-month programme working with power solution manufacturing firm Volex, where AFC aimed to improve the economics of its generators. John Wilson, [...]
H2-View News: Honda to mothball hydrogen fuel cell making with General Motors
Honda said it would scrap making the technology through its Fuel Cell System Manufacturing (FCSM) JV, which only began “mass” production in 2024 at a facility in Michigan, US. The company said the JV yielded “some positive results”, and the pair “reached an agreement” to discontinue fuel cell making at FCSM after discussions about the “continuation” of the business. Neither company has stated whether the FCSM JV will be scrapped altogether. However, last October, GM halted the development of next-generation fuel cells being worked on in Michigan. This latest move from Honda suggests the FCSM facility in Brownstown could essentially [...]
H2-View News: EU opens offtaker phase after 260 hydrogen projects respond to matchmaking call
The Commission said domestic and international companies showed “significant interest” in the supply-side calls of its Hydrogen Mechanism, drawing offers from more than 260 projects. This new phase will remain open until 20 March 2026, with potential buyers encouraged to sign up. The Hydrogen Mechanism falls under the EU Energy and Raw Materials Platform, which aims to match supply and demand for raw materials, natural gas, and biomethane. Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen said the instrument was off to a “very promising start.” “The Hydrogen Mechanism is one of the instruments which will help us to make our energy system cleaner, [...]
H2-View News: Six projects sign grant contracts for €270m from second European Hydrogen Bank round
Six green hydrogen projects selected for per kilogramme subsidies in the second European Hydrogen Bank auction have signed grant agreements representing €270.6m ($317.5m). The projects, located in Finland, Spain, and Norway, will receive between €0.33 ($0.39) and €1.88 ($2.21) per kilogramme of renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO)-compliant produced over 10 years, funded by Emissions Trading Scheme revenues. H2-View News: Hydrogen aviation lobby group praises £43m UK green flight funding
The government says the funding could unlock investment and decarbonisation, and drive “millions” into the sector. The scheme will open calls to UK businesses, researchers, and universities to compete for a share of the funding by demonstrating research and development potential that can accelerate clean aviation. The HIA, made up of companies like easyJet, Rolls-Royce, Airbus, and GKN Aerospace, said the £43m will help ensure the UK is a leader in hydrogen-powered aviation. The government has not indicated which specific technologies it is looking to support. However, it comes after it has firmed up its plans to support sustainable aviation [...]
