The Sauk Valley Hydrogen facility has kicked off hydrogen production using a small-scale Ohmium PEM electrolyser powered by Invenergy’s co-located solar facility. Producing up to 40 tonnes of hydrogen per year, H2 View estimates the electrolyser system to have a capacity of around 150kW. The first volumes of hydrogen have been used as a cooling agent for a turbine generator at Invenergy’s 980MW natural gas facility adjacent to the installation. The hub is being developed as a joint venture between BP and the Aberdeen City Council, although Scottish manufacturer Hydrasun made the purchase order for Nel’s unit. A final investment decision (FID) was taken on the hub last year. Hydrasun, a specialist in hydrogen system integration and refuelling solutions, will design and build the hub’s refuelling station and infrastructure, selecting Nel’s electrolyser for hydrogen production. The CEO, Cyril Dufau-Sansot, confirmed to H2 View that the unnamed partner will locally transform green ammonia into ammonium nitrate, the main feedstock of mining explosives. The initiative is set to begin in 2027 and green ammonia production to start in 2030, boasting 300MW of electrolyser capacity. Last year, Hy2Gen was awarded 307MW of electricity to produce 230,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year at the facility. Certified under the Gas Appliance Regulation (GAR), the German firm’s 10kW heat generator underwent testing by Kiwa, an independent testing, inspection, and certification (TIC) company. The French industrial gas major’s venture capital arm made an undisclosed investment in Power to Hydrogen (P2H2) to support the US firm’s capital-raising efforts. It comes after the company closed its Series A round in August 2024 having raised over $18m to scale and deploy its electrolysis technology based on a hybrid liquid alkaline-AEM stack design. India allocated ₹22.39bn crores ($258.84m) to support 450,000 tonnes per year of green hydrogen production – the maximum allowable under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) Programme. Last December, the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) announced that the country’s second hydrogen auction was oversubscribed, attracting 14 bids for 625,500 tonnes. In the end, four bidders missed out, while those who aimed for maximum subsidies in select years lowered their overall average by quoting ultra-low rates in others. Energy Minister Chris Bowen today (March 20) gave the Western Australian project the green light by awarding it up to AUD $814m ($514m) in production incentives. The 10-year production credit, under the first AUD $2bn ($1.26bn) Hydrogen Headstart package, will be paid at “production milestones” to support the project’s development. While the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) has not confirmed the subsidy’s per-kilogramme rate, the project plans to produce 900,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year in its first stage. Asian media outlet Nikkei first reported the news, indicating that Iwatani withdrew from the project amid mounting global challenges to decarbonisation. The Japanese multinational has also shut down its Queensland office, according to Nikkei. Just last month, the Queensland Government rejected project developer Stanwell Corporation’s AUD $1bn ($614m) funding request through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA).
